Chapter Eight

Alex was on pins and needles as he rang Kade's doorbell. He had a plan and prayed he could carry it out.

When the door opened, he sniffed, saying, "Spaghetti?"

Kade laughed. "Hello to you, too."

"Sorry. Hi." He handed Kade a bottle of wine. "I guess I chose right. It's red."

Taking it, Kade agreed that he had before going to the kitchen where he got out a corkscrew to open the bottle and pour some wine into glasses. He handed one to Alex, saying, "Let's go out back. Huck's been out there on his lonesome for the last hour, since I got tired of him begging for meatballs."

The dog greeted them like long-lost friends, grabbing a ball to drop at Alex's feet. Alex threw it then quickly took a seat on one of the lounge chairs.

Kade smirked, dropping down on the other one. "That won't stop him."

It didn't, as Alex found out when Huck dashed back with the ball. Between sips of wine, he tossed the ball, muttering, "He's incorrigible."

"No kidding."

They finished their wine, talking about how their respective weekends had been.

"Ready to eat?" Kade finally asked.

"I was ready an hour ago," Alex replied as he followed Kade back into the house.

"Good thing I made plenty, then." Kade turned on the heat under the spaghetti to let it finish cooking, then set the table with Alex's help. He put everything into bowls, got the salad from the fridge, and refilled their glasses. With everything ready, they sat down to eat.

"If I could cook half as good as you," Alex said after taking a few bites.

"It's only spaghetti."

"It makes mine taste like it came out of can," Alex replied, earning a smile of disbelief from Kade and a promise to give him the recipe.

By the time they'd finished eating, Alex was stuffed, or so he told Kade. He helped Kade clean up before pouring them each another glass of wine and suggesting they forego going out to a movie, which had been the plan.

"So, what do you want to do instead?" Kade asked, leaning against the kitchen counter.

"Talk."

"About?" Kade looked warily at Alex.

Alex took a deep breath. "Us. We seem to be teetering on the edge of moving on with what I think is a relationship, but then you pull back."

"I don't," Kade protested. "I'm just taking things slow. I told you that. We have to be certain."

"I am certain," Alex replied. "I know what I feel for you. I think, somewhere inside, you feel the same for me, but you're not willing…" He paused, looking at Kade. "Why won't you take the final step, Kade? Why can't you commit to us?"

Kade lowered his gaze, staring into his wine glass as if it held the answer. "There are reasons," he said so softly that Alex could hardly hear him.

"The ones you wouldn't talk about that night by the river?" Alex took a wild guess, hoping he was right—and wrong. "The one person, other than me, who knew that you were gay?"

Kade looked up, meeting Alex's eyes.
